Who it is for

Retrovax is a Czech and Slovak roleplay server for GTA V, running on FiveM. Players live a second life in a city where they have jobs, cars and now and then a plan for a heist.

The portal is where a player goes before playing and between sessions: to read the rules, apply for the whitelist, check the stats or visit the store. Someone arriving for the first time usually does not yet know how the server works.

The idea

A new player has to understand how the server works before they first connect.

Anyone who wants to join needs to know the rules, get through the whitelist and understand how a living is made on the server. All of it has to be findable before they launch the game.

The portal puts it in one place: the rules, the whitelist application, server stats and a catalogue of activities from legal jobs to big heists, each with its reward and duration. The game systems behind it run on Lua.

How I built it

The activity catalogue on the Retrovax portal, with filters and a card per activity.

The activity catalogue

Activities from truck haulage and house break-ins to a bank robbery, sorted into legal, illegal and big heists. The filters on top show how many activities each group holds, and every card says what it pays and how long it takes.

Before the heist starts

Every heist, from a cash machine to the bank, has its reward range and the time it takes written on the card. The player knows what they are getting into, and whether it is worth it, before starting it in game.

One click into the game

The connect button opens the server straight in FiveM through a cfx.re link, so nobody has to copy a server address anywhere. Discord sits right beside it, and the VIP store has its own bar above the whole page.

The small things

  1. 01

    The rules in one place

The server rules have a page of their own, so anyone can be sent a link to them.

  2. 02

    The whitelist on the web

The whitelist application has its own page on the portal.

  3. 03

    Stats

Server stats are public on the portal, readable without launching the game.

  4. 04

    Photo contest and team

The players' photo contest and the team that runs the server each have a page.

  5. 05

    A trailer up front

The server teaser is right on the home page, under the headline and the buttons.

  6. 06

    The VIP bar

The link to the VIP store sits in a thin bar above the whole page, out of the main content.

Colour and type

A near-black, a dark red and a cool blue-grey for headings. The typeface is the system one, so nothing has to download and the portal is readable the moment it loads.
